How To Hire A Professional DJ
for Your Wedding Reception

It's no news to anyone, especially the happy couple, that planning a wedding is an incredibly stressful time. Although we can't help you decide between Pinot Grigio and Merlot, or break the news to the bridesmaids that fuchsia ruffles are all the rage in wedding attire this season, the American Disc Jockey Association is here to take some of the worry out of one of the most important aspects of your day: the reception entertainment.

To avoid wedding day disappointments, you will want to be sure that your disc jockey service is not a fly by night buisness. The standards that the ADJA requires of its members and the support it gives its members help ensure that your day will be handled in a professional and competent manner . . . freeing you to worry about remembering the rings or where to honeymoon.

Before hiring a disc jockey for your wedding, keep these qualifications in mind:
  • Professionalism: Be sure you choose a service that is insured and is member of some professional organization; member of the American Disc Jockey Association is a good indicator. Many responsible business owners carry liability insurance to protect their businesses and the consumer. Many locations are beginning to require proof of liability. Ask for proof of liability insurance. Disc Jockey's receive a Certificate of Liability which can be used as proof.

  • Accessibility: Your DJ or company should be willing to meet with you beforehand so that you can see/view the equipment (at a non-wedding event if time and venue location permits), music library, and see a demo of previous reception(s).

  • Equipment: Your disc jockey service should use professional audio equipment, rather than a home sound system. The equipment should be cased to give the best presentation and protection. If you are not sure, check with a local music dealer or the A.D.J.A. to verify they are using professional-grade sound gear. Remember that professional gear does not guarantee an entertainer's talent or service level, but is simply a tool for building an exceptional event. 
  • Back Up Plan: Ask about the DJ's plans for back up personnel or equipment in case of illness, accident, or other unforeseen circumstances. Although equipment failure is rare, do you really want your special occasion ruined because your Disc Jockey did not come prepared?     Booking a reliable Disc Jockey is a very important decision for the success of your party. Selecting a Disc Jockey who is an active member of the American Disc Jockey Association will provide you with the confidence that you have selected a trained professional. A.D.J.A. members are more likely to be involved with other Disc Jockey's who can help them out with an unexpected situation.

  • Music Format: Choose a DJ who is willing to meet with you ahead of time to discuss your ideas for music selections. Ask if she or he will honor music requests. A versatile Disc Jockey is willing to listen to your suggestions, give you feedback and play from your desired song list. A professional Disc Jockey will also accept the fact you may not want certain songs played. A professional Disc Jockey cannot know everything about your musical preferences and entertainment needs without communication.

  • Event Procedure and Etiquette: Choose a DJ who is knowledgeable about and willing to work with you in planning the announcements, schedule of events,and other aspects of your wedding and reception. Most professional entertainers will coordinate, emcee and provide the music that you desire. Ask if they have experience with your type of event.

  • Preparing for the Event: Discuss your expectations of the DJ for YOUR event. Most Disc Jockey's arrive at least one hour prior to the start time you've given them. Your entertainer should ideally be setup and in-place before your first guest walks through the door.

  • Disc Jockey Attire: A professional DJ will dress appropriately according to your wishes. There should be no extra cost for formal attire.

  • The Contract: It is extremely important to have your booking confirmed in writing. Ask for a written agreement, especially if you are paying an initial retainer. The standard initial payment for entertainment services is 50%. If you are expecting a specific entertainer, make sure you get it in writing as well.

One way to be sure your disc jockey meets these qualifications is to select a member of the American Disc Jockey Association. The ADJA is an organization of professional disc jockeys whose goal is to maintain a high standard of quality in performance and business ethics. Member disc jockeys meet professional standards and strive to improve their quality of service by networking with other members across the country.
